What is a Life Path number?

The Life Path number is the most important number in a Pythagorean numerology chart. It is derived from your full date of birth by reducing each component — month, day, and year — to a single digit (or a Master Number: 11, 22, or 33), then summing and reducing again. It describes your core tendencies, the opportunities you attract, and the challenges you are here to work through.

How name numbers work — Pythagorean system

In Pythagorean numerology, each letter maps to a digit 1–9 (A=1, B=2 … I=9, then cycles). The Expression (Destiny) number uses all letters of your full birth name and shows your innate talents and potential. The Soul Urge counts only vowels and reveals your inner desires and motivations. The Personality number counts only consonants and reflects how others perceive you at first meeting.

The Birthday number is simply the reduced day of birth — a supporting influence that adds a specific gift to your Life Path energy.

Master Numbers 11, 22, 33

When reduction would produce 11, 22, or 33 at any intermediate step, these are kept as-is rather than reduced further. Master Numbers carry amplified energy: 11 (heightened intuition), 22 (the master builder), and 33 (compassionate teaching). This calculator preserves them correctly at every stage.

FAQ

What are Master Numbers and how are they handled?
11, 22, and 33 are Master Numbers — they are not reduced further at any step. For example, if your month reduces to 11 and your day to 29 (which reduces to 11), both are kept as 11 before summing. This calculator applies that rule at every step of the Life Path calculation.
Is Y a vowel or a consonant in numerology?
This calculator treats Y as a consonant in the Pythagorean system (a common simplification). Some practitioners count Y as a vowel when it acts as the only vowel sound in a syllable. If your reading feels off, try both and see which resonates more strongly.
Should I include middle names?
Yes — use your complete legal name at birth, including all middle names, exactly as they appear on your birth certificate. Married names or shortened names are not used for the core chart; they carry separate energy as secondary influences.
